Ruby is as strong in scripting as Perl.

built-in regular expression (Perl5 compatible).

almost all equivalent functionality of Perl.
except weird features and syntax. ;-)

can access all system calls on UNIX
via syscall at least

can access all system calls on Win32
via Win32API

Useful for scripting, but not limited to it.
